Physician Assistant (Overnight shift)

Department Description: Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Needham (BID–Needham) is a licensed 58–bed acute care hospital offering the same care as our direct affiliate Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in your community.
This close affiliation with BIDMC, since 2000, has facilitated the clinical integration of staff and resources in emergency medicine, hospital medicine (hospitalists), cardiology, radiology, orthopaedics, general surgery, pathology and oncology. Physicians in Needham maintain very close relationships with the staff at BIDMC; so in cases where patients need to be transferred from Needham to Boston for more advanced care, there are systems in place to make that transition happen quickly.

Job Summary: The physician assistant serves as a key clinical provider and team member in the treatment and management of the surgical patient in the operative, emergency department, medical-surgical floor and intensive care unit settings. The physician assistant will practice under the direction of the Chair of Surgery and other attending surgeons in a manner consistent with both the Board of Registration in Medicine regulations and hospital policy. Primarily, this individual will cover patients of BID-Needham physicians credentialed in the Department of Surgery and will also work collaboratively with the Hospitalist on the medical-surgical floor. The physician assistant is responsible for the initial assessment and admission of surgical patients; assisting in the evaluation and preparation of patients for surgery; caring for patients following surgery and in the intensive care unit setting.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination. Ensures that all requisite testing is completed.
  2. Presents and discusses the findings of the initial evaluation with the Attending Orthopedic Surgeon to determine the treatment plan. Document the treatment plan and writes appropriate orders.
  3. Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Reviews patient care management issues with the Attending Orthopedic Surgeon. Consults with appropriate resources as needed.
  4. Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation.
  5. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to wound care, suturing and removal, splint and brace application or removal, medication administration, removal of central venous lines, insertion of nasogastric tubes, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy, IV insertion, electrocardiograms.
Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree required.
  2. License Physician Assistant License required., and Registration Heartsaver Certificate (CPR) required.
  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  4. Licensed by the Massachusetts Board of Physician Assistants, which requires candidates to have passed the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants examination, hold a Bachelor Degree in any field, and have completed a two-year accredited physician assistant program.
  5. Demonstrated analytical abilities and strong interpretative skills for integrating information from the patient history, physical exam and diagnostic data to be able to formulate a differential diagnosis and subsequent treatment plan for orthopedic patients in both elective and emergent situations.
  6. Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills. Evidence of continued education and professional development.
  7. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  4. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  7. Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Age based Competencies:

Physical Nature of the Job:
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.
