Security Engineer I

Department Description: This role is on the Beth Israel Lahey Health IT team supporting Cyber Security.

Job Summary: Responsible for collaborating with Senior IT Security staff on projects and information security research that impacts the security profile, reducing risk and exposure of the BILH infrastructure.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Monitors and analyzes the output from the IDS and IPS devices. Initiates remediation actions and further research controls and countermeasures where required.
  2. Develops and fosters relationships, shares and collaborates with IT personnel allowing for the effective exchange of information and ideas.
  3. Understands new and emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and exploits that can affect BILH's information resources confidentiality, integrity and availability.
  4. Works with Senior IT Security staff to conduct network, host, and mobile device forensic investigations, documenting incident results and providing IT management with incident reporting and summary observations through lessons learned
  5. Responds to cyber security incidents through remediation efforts including implementation of secure tools, solutions, and the development of incident response and recovery processes.
  6. Works with IT personnel to define and implement hardened standards for networked devices and provide security guidance.
  7. Performs related duties as assigned.
  8. Required to be on-call periodically.
Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  2. Candidate expected to work towards SANS GCIA or similar within 6 months of entry.
  3. 1-3 years related work experience required in utilizing IT Security tools and applications.
  4. Working knowledge and experience with open-source security tools.
  5. Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience with open-source and licensed IPS/IDS/FW/Threat Feeds/Intelligence gathering, application and database security.
  1. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
  2. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.
  3. Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and determines how to accomplish defined results with some guidelines. Manager/Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.
  4. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally
