IS Application Developer


Department Description: The Beth Israel Deaconess Department of Radiology is looking for a full-stack developer to create web applications in support of imaging informatics research. The position reports to the Director of Radiology Informatics Innovation and will be embedded in a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, informaticists, analysts, research fellows and developers. The team collaborates across institutions in Boston's medical technology hub and is actively involved on projects with machine learning, radiomics, natural language processing, and large data set curation. A passion for healthcare is required; the position offers the opportunity to rapidly prototype tools in the clinical environment and directly work with clinician stakeholders. Applicants should be comfortable with javascript, Linux and SQL. Experience with React and NodeJS is preferred. A background with medical imaging, DICOM, and browser image viewers such as CornerstoneJS is helpful but not necessary. Opportunities for publication are available to the interested candidate.

Job Summary: An IS Application Developer designs, develops, debugs, tests, and implements small to mid-size clinical applications. She or he must apply strong technical skills while working independently on development projects. The job involves interaction with staff at all organizational levels within and without Information Systems. One performing the job must grasp the workings of the medical center environment and juggle the resulting occasionally conflicting requests in order to meet project goals. Prior development experience in a healthcare environment is extremely helpful.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Design, develop, debug, test, and implement small- to mid-size clinical systems
  2. Design software and data structures to address customer needs
  3. Collaborate with IS and other Medical Center staff to analyze current state, define requirements, re-engineer processes and estimate timelines in conjunction with IS management
  4. Provide quality customer service and support for clinical systems, serving as an exemplary representative of Information Systems
  5. Provide guidance and support to colleagues
Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or GED required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  2. 3-5 years related work experience required.
  3. Strong problem solving skills.
  4. Ability to write efficient and clear programming code and create data structures for support and enhancement of clinical systems within the Medical Center
  5. Ability to be flexible, versatile and adaptable in day-to-day activities conducted in a multi-site environment
  6. Advanced technical computer skills as required for technical support specific to functional area and related systems.

  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
