Audiologist-ENT Practice

Department Description: After 35 combined years in an academic otolaryngology (ears, nose and throat) practice David Vernick, MD and Harsha Gopal, MD decided to form a private practice in 2004 with a commitment to provide expert and timely care to patients in the greater Boston area. The practice of Vernick & Gopal welcomes patients with longstanding, unusual and unresolved otolaryngology problems. The practice was designed to include physicians and support staff with outstanding credentials who will carefully evaluate, collaborate and treat both simple and complex medical problems. Our staff includes highly skilled and board certified ear, nose and throat physicians and fully licensed audiologists.

Job Summary: Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Certified Clinical Audiologist provides comprehensive diagnostic and rehabilitative services to a diverse population of adults and children with hearing and balance disorders from a variety of referral sources. Approximately 80% of the time is expended in direct patient care, with the residual 20% spent analyzing test data, writing reports, communicating with patients and participating in divisional activities and assignments.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Perform full diagnostic hearing evaluation for pediatric and adults by utilizing the following: thorough case history intake; pure tone air and bone conduction, speech sensitivity and speech discrimination; tympanometry , acoustic reflex threshold and decay; otoacoustic emissions as applicable.
  2. Interpret results of diagnostic evaluation and make appropriate recommendations for follow-up care to include: further audiological assessment, medical intervention and/or rehabilitative measures. Communicate diagnostic findings to patients, family members, physicians and other sources in concise, tactful and language appropriate manner.
  3. Perform hearing aid evaluation with appropriate recommendation. Describe and differentiate between digital technology levels and appropriateness for patient's hearing needs.Demonstrate effective technique for earmold impression and competence in programming and fitting the instruments. Effectively administer, interpret and apply hearing handicap scales, real-ear analysis and sound field measures.
  4. Troubleshoot hearing instruments. Perform routine maintenance and minor shell repair/modification on all styles of hearing instruments. Perform and interpret electro-acoustic analysis of hearing aids.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree required in Audiology. Doctoral degree preferred in Audiology
  2. 1-3 years related work experience required.
  3. Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology from the American Speech and Hearing Association .
  4. Possess or be eligible for licensure in Audiology from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  5. All areas of service must be performed in keeping with current standards of practice as defined by BIDHC/APG, the Medical Center and the American Speech and Hearing Association.
  6. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Experience in diagnosis and remediation of hearing and balance disorders with proven skills in AEP, ENG/EVG and digital hearing aid fitting.

  1. Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.
  2. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  3. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
  4. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  5. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.

Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
