Social Worker - Center for Violence Prevention and Recovery - Adelante


Department Description: Adelante is a new initiative within BIDMC’s Center for Violence Prevention and Recovery. Adelante is a collaborative endeavor between BIDMC’s CVPR and Brigham & Women’s Hospital Center for Community Health and Health Equity. The Adelante Advocate works as part of a multidisciplinary team working on both the prevention and intervention of labor and sex trafficking in our communities. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Violence Prevention and Recovery and is designed as 40-hour per week position with a flexible schedule and possibility of off-hours coverage to serve the needs of this unique patient population.

Essential Responsibilities:
• Provide direct services that promote healing-centered engagement and support to clients who are impacted by trafficking, which include: advocacy, individual support and groups; ongoing case management; accompaniment to health care appointments, court, and community programs; outreach; and engagement to offer supportive services that are flexible and tailored to the individual’s needs
• Work in a collaborative and coordinated fashion with Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Center for
Community Health and Health Equity and partners on this OVC grant and attend all grant related meetings, trainings, and activities.
• Provide referrals and information to clients who are or have experienced trafficking. Work collaboratively with the team to ensure comprehensive continuum of care.
• Provide consultation, training and technical assistance to health care providers about the referral process, screening and ways of creating access to people who are impacted by trafficking.
• Complete comprehensive orientation and on-boarding process in both the Beth Israel and Brigham & Women’s Hospital systems.
• Attend all team meetings at CVPR.
• Participate in weekly clinical supervision.

Other responsibilities:
• Confidentiality and compliance with professional ethics.
• Data entry for case management and program evaluation purposes.
• Coordinate services with other departments internally at the hospital and in the community.
• Provide on-call coverage for CVPR, as needed, within the hospital.
• Attend appropriate meetings in the hospital and community.
• Any other activities as appropriate and assigned by manager to advance the work of the program.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bilingual Spanish/English fluency strongly preferred (speaking, reading and writing).
• Experience in health care, trafficking, and/or addressing complex trauma, violence and abuse.
• Commitment to social, racial and gender justice issues.
• Must have solid advocacy and clinical skills, excellent judgment and interpersonal skills. Must work effectively as a member of a team and collaboratively with other professionals within the hospital and community.
• Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation/training skills; ability to assimilate information and communicate with various constituents.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple teams/projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfort in bridging the hospital and community settings and demonstrated success in working with diverse (e.g. race, ethnicity, age, class, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities) populations collaboratively to respond to the issue of labor and sex trafficking.
• Must be comfortable using computerized word processing and database programs.

Job Summary: Under clinical supervision, responsible for psychosocial screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients and families in assigned patient population. Collaborates with physicians, nurses, internal and external case managers, community agencies, and other health care professionals to implement safe and effective patient care.
Reports to the social work manager / manager of clinical service area

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Provides clinical services to patients and families that address personal and environmental issues in order to maximize emotional, social, and physical well being and the appropriate and efficient use of health care resources.. Meets productivity standards set by clinical service area.
  2. Screens and triages patients who request service, are referred, or meet screening criteria for identifying patients' needs. Conducts psychosocial assessments and provides services as indicated. Partners with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate continuity of care planning.
  3. Provides counseling and psychotherapeutic services appropriate to setting. Provides timely and appropriate communication and documentation in medical record. Provides consultation and education regarding psycho-social issues affecting patient care. Advises and addresses ethical and risk management issues.
  4. Presents and/or discusses clinical work in formal and informal settings and seminars. Participates in CQI efforts and in After Hours Program as needed. Partners with advanced staff on research. Presents clinical material and theory at teaching conferences and seminars.
  5. Participates in one's own clinical supervision as appropriate to level of professional development. Serves as a content resource for multidisciplinary staff; and may serve as mentor/trainer/clinical supervisor to less experienced staff.
Required Qualifications:
  1. Master's degree in Social Work required.
  2. License Lic Clinical Social Worker required., or Registration Lic Indep Clinical Social Work required.
  3. 0-1 years related work experience required.
  4. New graduates and out of state MSW prepared Social Workers are expected to obtain Massachusetts license within 3-6 months of hire date. Will need to work under the direct clinical supervision by a licensed social worker and have all notes co-signed until license has been obtained.
  5. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

  1. Health care and/or human service experience.

  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  7. Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move through out the hospital campus
