Arrhythmia Monitoring Technician

Department Description: Electrophysiology at BIDMC has long been recognized for its pioneering and innovative role in the treatment of heart rhythm disorders. The CVI's Harvard-Thorndike Electrophysiology Institute and Arrhythmia Service is the oldest, largest program of its kind in New England, providing specialized arrhythmia care for patients from around the region and around the world.

Job Summary: Provides technical assistance and administrative/clerical support to Cardiac Monitor / Holter Lab, staff and patients. Performs ECG waveform analysis. Learns to recognize and identify Cardiac arrhythmias through lab training.

Essential Responsibilities:
  1. Schedules appointments and checks in patients. Answers phones, elicits information from patients in order to triage phone calls and distinguish emergent, urgent and routine problems.
  2. Applies Long -Term ECG monitors and event recorders with full understanding of EKG signals in order to obtain accurate and readable recording/data. Explains procedures to patients and family members prior to monitor application and provides teaching instructions with regard to monitor functioning and removal.
  3. Accesses patient transmissions and final report summaries from out-source platforms. Performs analysis of daily tracings and writes final reports for MD review. Assembles medical charts per Joint Commission standards and ensures all records contain accurate patient identification and documentation/paperwork.
  4. Instructs patients about operation of and troubleshoots equipment problems as needed. Maintains monitor and supply inventory; maintains an accurate numeric log number for all monitors which is used for billing and statistical purposes.
  5. Performs ECG analysis. Learns and develops skills to recognize and identify more complex arrhythmias, and assessment of waveform durations through ongoing training in the lab. Rotates weekend coverage with Arrhythmia Techs and works independently.
Required Qualifications:
  1. High School diploma or GED required.
  2. Certificate 1 Certified Cardiographic Tech preferred.
  3. 1-3 years related work experience required.
  4. Basic familiarity with computers. Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences or a related field is strongly preferred. Familiarity with anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.
  2. Minimum of 1 year training or experience in cardiac technology, cardiac monitoring or event monitor analysis is preferred or certification as Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) or Cardiac Rhythm Analysis Technician (CRAT).
  1. Decision Making: Ability to make decisions that are guided by general instructions and practices requiring some interpretation. May make recommendations for solving problems of moderate complexity and importance.
  2. Problem Solving: Ability to address problems that are varied, requiring analysis or interpretation of the situation using direct observation, knowledge and skills based on general precedents.
  3. Independence of Action: Ability to follow precedents and procedures. May set priorities and organize work within general guidelines. Seeks assistance when confronted with difficult and/or unpredictable situations. Work progress is monitored by supervisor/manager.
  4. Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisors; communicate effectively with patients, families and other medical center staff; and respond to basic questions.
  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.
  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.
  7. Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.
  8. Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
